Do Whitening Toothpastes Really Work?

2024-12-09T16:27:17

They can work really well! Whitening toothpastes are most effective being
used as part of a whitening routine. The most noticeable teeth whitening
would happen following this routine:

Dental cleaning and polishing> At home teeth whitening > Whitening
toothpaste

At Arbo Dental Care, we’ve found this routine to be the most effective for
our patients in Bradford.

By far the most effective way to reduce the staining on our teeth is to
reduce the contact time of foods, drinks or other habits. Common examples
are foods/drinks that would stain a white t-shirt will also stain our
teeth, that includes berries, red wine, pop, coffee, smoking, curry, acidic
foods etc.

So if you intend to whiten your teeth consider modifying or limiting these
items. Drinking red wine every night will definitely reduce effectiveness
of any teeth whitening routine. A modification with berries would be to
make a smoothie and drink with a straw or eat with a spoon. Otherwise you
will not get the most out of your teeth whitening routine!

With whitening toothpastes, most of them work by using physical abrasives.
We have to be careful with teeth that have gum recession or root exposure.
The surface of the tooth root is softer than the enamel, so we have to
avoid any attempt to whiten the root or brush the root.
