Crowns are needed on teeth when the tooth is structurally compromised, either it has cracks or it has already fractured. The recommended treatment over the long-term to keep that tooth intact is to protect it with a crown (otherwise known as a cap). Another, larger filling, won’t hold up long term and leaving the tooth exposed is not an option.
